THE ARGENTINE ASSOCIATION OF BIOETHICS,
understanding
that progress results from the search for surpassingness that enlivens Man, and that this
search, in order to be fruitful, should have a substance and a sense oriented towards the
acknowledgement of Man as an end in himself.
upholding
an ethics that regards the person as an end in itself, a centre of value fulfillment, that
is contrary to any attempt of manipulation or use, admitting that the bounds to technology
can be found in dehumanization, claiming that the person's freedom and dignity are the
constitutive principles more inherent to the human being as such.
regarding:
that current
technological and scientifical advances have provided. Man with the possibility of
intervening in Nature and in himself, running the risk that possibility subdues the
dignity and rights os humanity, and of future generations.
considering:
- that
knowledge is rapidly improving and thus transforming the world we live in, modifying our
culture, our customs, and the relationship with
other beings of the planet,
- that also,
that advance in knowledge requires a growing specialization, reducing reality, increa-
singly fragmenting the field of knowledge, thus
resulting in a lesser comprehension of the whole
and the consequences of this process,
- that the last
findings in Genetics, Biotechonology, Computer Sciences, Mass Media, etc. bring
about new situations whose solutions for us and
the coming generations are value-laden and re-
quire study, reflection and analysis from an
interdisciplinary view.
- that we
increasingly face the posing of true moral
dilemmas, that emerge from this present rea-
lity, cannot be solved within the technical
scientifical field that brought them about, and involve
all planetary life.
proposes
A-
to gather professionals, educators, researchers and/or people whose work on Bioethics is
well-known,
B-
to encourage reflection and open interdisciplinary discussion from a pluralistic and
democatric view, with neither political nor religious distinctions in so far as these do
not oppose the previous assumption,
by carryng out:
1- regional
and national annual meetings to analyze the bioethical issues we are concerned about,
searching for solutions and submitting
projects to the institutions and bodies that can offer a
bioethical response to community problems
2- the
connection with bioetthical reality in Latin America and the rest of the world
3- the
organization of a specialized library, and a computerized network that makes permanent
updating in this field possible by linking
our centres with others from the world,
4- the
provision of assistance services by advising people or institutions at their request
5- the
organization of posgraduate courses of specialization in Bioethics
6- the
inclusion of Bioethics in the academic-professional training
7- the
promotion of public debate on the bioethical issues posed by technical-scientific advances
by creating a forum for reflection and
discussion
